It's a good question! Most likely he was a agnostic or atheist, certainly his non-belief would have been consistent with his socilaist views.

The best clue to his attitude to religion is to be found in "Animal Farm". Moses the Raven, is symbolic of the Chruch. Moses talks about "Sugarcandy Mountain", an animal version of heaven.
