The end 1984 has always haunted me. When Winston cries out "do it to her! do it to Julia!" it shatters your belief in love being the power that transends any other force. If I recall the last sentace of 1984 Winton comes to the realisation that he "loves big brother"
I think that was Orwell's point: the world of 1984 is such a grim, depressing place that the Party can subvert even our most primal feelings. They *can* get inside your mind, just as Julia feared.
Then again, look what happend in Stalinist Russia - love couldn't stop the NKVD or purges. Maybe life can't always have a happy, hollywood ending.
