I think it comes down to the personal convictions and character of the individual. Some people would "die for love", how ever there would be an equal number who wouldn't.

Re parental love, history has shown plenty of examples of parents willingly sacrificing their lives to save those of their children.

But then there are many examples of parents sacrificing a child to save/further themselves. Is some parts of the world parents willingly sell girls into prostitution (and yes I'm aware that these people may live under the most appalling economic conditions). Thanks to China's one child policy you've seen a rise in infanticide where a culture that favours the male child has seen many female children abandoned.

Or during the Cultural Revolution where children where encouraged to report their parents to the secret police for "counter revolutionary" thoughts.

Culture, society and the like seem to destroy what we would think as a natural bond. Orwell's point is that a dictatorship is just as evil as it's want to substitute all other forms of love for the love of BB and the state.
