This paragraph is quite self-explainatory.
People have been gradualy turned into corupt robots, all that remained was just the hatred, anguish, fear, despair and the lust for power. Just madnes and fanaticism. Within this "crimestop and doublethink" mindframe, no deep soul-matters were possible.
Also, see the significancy of the newspeak: the purpose was to indoctrinate people + to prevent them from thinking harmful ideas.
