He wrote 1984 (most of it) in Barnhill (?) in the isle of Jura.

Animal Farm was written a bit all over the place, but his (first) wife proof read it to him when they were in bed - which some suggest is the reason why the novel is so accessible and widely read.

The Road to Wigan Pier was written from a diary and notes he kept when he went there (see Collected Essays and Journalism Vol 1).

He political articles for Tribune (c.1942-5) read like they were written fresh, and yet have a polished-ness making them worthy of being classed as essays.

That's all I can think of at the moment.
