However, I believe Orwell is very difficult to misunderstand. Read the Collected Essays Journalism and Letters (Vols 1-4) and it's all there (the shift from (but never discarding) socialism to pacifism to patriotism, etc, etc).
The thing that makes Orwell so disliked in Universities is precisely that he is perhaps a little too straightforward and honest. 'Common decency' seems to have been something he really abided by - much to the annoyance of high-brow intellectuals.
