"Do it to her! Do it to her!" is the climax of 1984; the terrible orgasm of horror. All that follows is resolution and epilogue. The point was that people may die for love - they do, you know - but each person has something that is utterly unendurable and against which they cannot mount any defence; they MUST capitulate. Threaten a person with that ultimate agony and no other emotion can prevail. The only hope in the face of this fact is that, in the real world, it's impossible reliably to identify the contents of room 101.
The fact that the Big Brother can idnetify each victim's unendurable is one factor that has led me to believe that 1984 is a psychological parable; not in any sense a depiction of external "reality". I think there's only one character in 1984 - the author.
