Orwell's point was that the leaders of the animal revolution adopted the manners of their former oppressors, thus becoming no different (and maybe worse for that). Reading was the first step in the process, wearing clothes, sleeping in beds and finally walking on two legs (two legs bad, four legs good!). All these activities were formally specific to "humans", the animals oppressors - no the pigs adopted this habits and used them to keep the animals under their control.
