"Commies" is rather negative, and seeing as the trm is usu applied to all communists and socialits alike (esp. in the west, where people don't read Marx before concluding and differentiating). When one talks abt Che Guevara or Tito, even many other communists that had a strong affiliation with the Soviet block during the "Cold War," the term when applied to the Stalinist regime in Russia (being the main influence in 1984) is too strong in addition to misleading and unfair.
As a different view-point, though not as a criticism, calling Smith an "intellegent" man may be an exageration of a "moralistic" man, being in the sense that the Party and Oceania are "immoralistic," as the book to most people portrays. Even calling smith a dissident man works, as dissidence is a supposed virtue of democracy and freedom.
