I am studying 1984 for my hsc and i have been presented with the question does power reside with the people? At first i thought yes, that's the essence of democracy, however this is certainly not the case with Winsten and his society. He rebels against the party and therefore they do not have complete power over him because they do not have complete control over his thoughts. The more i thought about it the more i realised that our own power is limited, cirtinly not to the exstent of 1984, but there aspects of our society that are controled beyond my power. Any reader from Australia (where i live) would know that the government was acused of keeping vital infromation about the children overboard afair a secret until after national elections. Also the media plays a huge role in determining what we think, most of which is all onwned by thge same 'elite' people. So i must now ask for anybodies opinions as to who has power in our society and in 1984 and please reply ASAP becuase the assessment tast is due really soon. Even if you want to disagree with what i say please write back.
