Jeez,

how can then give you this horrible, speculative asignment like this?

There is a good commentary from O. about the state of England society between the wars and his own upbringing, in second part of the book "The the road to Wigan Pier"

The part you might want to read is this: http://orwell.ru/library/novels/The_Road_to_Wigan_Pier/e/ewp_09.htm You can cut and paste whole parts about effects of First World War on England - and to make a comparison with the sixties in the US/the Viet-nam war.

"to him, as an ordinary man, a crank meant a Socialist and a Socialist meant a crank" - here at another chapter of the same book, there are some hilarious observations: http://orwell.ru/library/novels/The_Road_to_Wigan_Pier/e/ewp_11.htm

Good luck. If you don't know what happened in 60's in the US (because you are not from here, and came only recently) find some friends - or books - that can help you with the
subject. Don't be surprized, if you get very different story from different sources.
