It might help you out if you'd read Down And Out In Paris And London. At least you'd understand why Orwell got into writing Clergyman's Daughter.
At the time when he was down and out in london he actually met a Clergyman and his daughter.
I think that the book was generally against English class society. Wich actually hasn't changed that much since 1940's.
In addition maybe he needed to criticize unjust English school system because he had been studying in Eton (a jolly good school for rich kids.)
Perhaps he wanted to shake away his past in upper class.
