1. I believe "100 yards away" refers to the warders' need to escape the site of the horrid act they had just committed. The ever-popular cliche, "out of sight, out of mind," is highlighted by their necessity of laughter, alcohol, and distance to avoid the guilt of the hanging.

2. the gray rains, "quite bare" prison camp, "tall" warders vs. the "wisp of a man" prisoner, the dog interrupting the procession, the step aside of the puddle signifying consciousness of the prisoner.

ANY OTHER THOUGHTS ON THIS MATTER???
