You bring up many valid questions, as I think this work intends to do. I do not think anybody has the God-given right to take a life without just cause. In this case, we are struck with whether or not to follow an order. The narrator in this essay recognizes the inhumanity in his actions when the man side-steps the puddle, but fails to do anything about it. Instead, he and the others hide behind their orders, justifying their actions and avoiding their guilt by claimin obligation. Is there a difference between this murder and another, such as in war? If this is their job, is it less noble than such professions as corroners, doctors, or lawyers? How does morality play into this hanging?
