I think it is a dream about something that is going to happen. (All Smith's dream came through in the novel). And I think it is also a dream about his hope that his misery would come to the end.
The novel ends before they shot him, because his soul was lost already - he even felt in love with BB after all. It is not that important what got his body at the end - bullet or Victory Gin.
