Totalitarianism is the worry for Orwell. Total control over feelings, thought, opinions, sexual preferences, etc etc. 1984 is a parody of todays society. Of course, our own society bears limeted resemblances to that in 1984, (although this is arguable and open to considerable debate), but instead 1984 offers a snapshot of what society COULD be like if we were to idolise and trust a goverment for all it 'suggests' is true. Orwell suggested that it is vital to value free thought and feel confident about your own individuality.
