As far as I know, the dog was a reflection on blindness that man should have with respect to crimes. The dog is color blind... it sees no evil when it comes to whatever the deed was as comitted by the prisoner. The dog represents innocence... it simply wanted to play... but after the man is killed... that innocence is lost. This is what I think the dog is about... hope it stimulates some ideas for you...
