How about the political use of fear. Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat use the fear their people have of each other to promote their own policies. Jean-Marie LePen has gone through to the second round of the French elections based mainly through the idea that his country should be fearful of immigrants and juvenile delinquancy. George Bush has used the fear his people have of terrorism to promote his global hegemony and politics. The thing is that all these people use the fear of the polulace as a means to do what they like in the name of that fear. Compare this with the ten-minute hate of whatsisname in 1984 (Goldstein, I think??? - significantly a jewish name) and Big Brother uses the fear of the people it controls to push through any legislation it likes or as an excuse for doing what it likes. See also the European anti-terrorist bill which is being pushed through since Barcelona and cannot be combatted as it is due to Sept 11 even if it means that demonstrators in the streets will have less rights, or something like that.
