Winston remembers figments of songs from his childhood (Oranges & Lemons), as they help him remember a past before the Party came into power.
The Party wants to rewrite history, the songs Winston remembers are evidence that his childhood and the world was different to the one the Party wants him and everyone else to remember - that official Party history conflicts with the actual past.
