News : 1984 opera

Date Wednesday, 4 May,2005
Author Maros Kollar
Outline On May the 3rd the opera adaption of George Orwell's 1984 received its premiere in the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London.

The production is a longtime project and the first opera score ever written by the world famous conductor  Lorin Maazel.

In  the run-up to the premiere there have been some disputes about the funding of the opera: Lorin Maazel financed the production with 400.000 GBP (587.000 €) own money. Since Maazel has no track record as an opera writer and just little reputation as a composer there were accusations that  Covent Garden is staging a vanity project.

Performances are scheduled for May 6th, 11th, 14th, 16th and 19th.
