1933

Down And Out In Paris And London (Report)

Down and Out in Paris and London was first published in Jannuary 1933 by the Victor Gollancz Ltd and by Harpner & and Brothers (NY) five months later. The original version of Down And Out entitled "A Scullion's Diary" was completed in October 1930 and came to only 35,000 words for Orwell had used only a part of his material. 1931 the London Chapters were added. In 1932 the title was first changed to "Confeesion of a Down and Out in Paris and London", and then to its actual name. In the original manuscript Orwell used an 'X' for his name before he finally adopted his pen-name, 'George Orwell'.

Burmese Days (Autobiographical novel)

Orwell's first novel. First published in October, 1934 in the United States. The British edition was published by Secker & Warburg, after some adaptions, in June 1935.

A Clergyman's Daughter (Novel)

A Clergyman's Daughter was first published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., in 1935, and just five months later by Harper & Brothers, New York.

Orwell's description of the depressed industrial areas in Northern England as well as a sharp criticism of the British left. Commissioned and published by Gollancz' Left Book Club.

Homage To Catalonia (Report)

A description of Orwell's participation in the Spanish Civil War along with an insightful description of the internecine battle between the various left-wing parties in Republican Spain. Orwell's experiences in Spain and the book mark a turning-point in Orwell's life and writing.

Animal Farm (Allegory)

Animal Farm was first published in 1945. Animal Farm is a satire on Stalinism and the Russian revolution. As Russia was an allied of England in 1945, Orwell had a hard time publishing it.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (Dystopian novel)

Nineteen Eighty-Four was first published by Martin Secker & Warburg, London, in 1949.The first paperback edition was published by Penguin Books, Harmondsworth, in 1954. Since then it has been reprinted in the Penguin edition twenty-six times.
