dantetheclerk's booklist
Book 'On the Road' by Jack Kerouac
User's comment One of the so called Beat Writers, the book is an auto-biography on his search for the American Dream by bumming from town to town living off odd-jobs and the experience he aquired from his traveling. Easily one of the most influential books in my life.

linespalsy's booklist
Book 'in front of your nose' by orwell, george
User's comment collection of essays, letters, and other miscellania from roughtly 1945 til author's death in 1950. interesting stuff, all gives a very honest and eclectic set of insights into all aspects of 20th century life. also tells a story in itself with the letters punctuating the essays and more "formal" writing, this gives a more self-referential depth to the reading. last part in a four-volume collection.

marshmallow man's booklist
Book 'Noughts and Crosses' by Malorie Blackman
User's comment This book i found to be somewhat like that of William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet. Well, as far as theme goes anyway. It is indeed a very enjoyable book that for some reason made me imagine the conflict in Northern Ireland. It is a story of two children who grow up together, the girl; Sephy, is bred from a family that are quite financially rewarded whereas the boy; Callum, is bred from the complete opposite (if you can imagine him as Billy Elliot sort of thing). You simply must read this book, it has its humerous topics throughout, merely sticking through the tough dramatic barrier side of the story. I can assure you though it shall bring tears to your eyes.

Book 'Naked Lunch' by William S. Burroughs
User's comment best book of the beat poets, written by a genius who employs a wide range of writing techniques like stream of consciousness, pornography, comic style, political writing and medical language (the book was written partly under the influence of drugs)...shocking, thrilling, thought-provoking

rubicon's booklist
Book 'An Outpost of Progress' by Conrad
User's comment It's probably the best book he ever wrote, being written however early in his career, even before Heart of Darkness was published. I don't know why I picked this one; frankly, it's the first book that came to mind, when thinking of Orwell's themes in his writings, of a bleak outlook of the world.
